Bali Launches Its First Public Electric Buses and Charging Stations

▷ MCEE’s ODA lays the groundwork for Korean green mobility to expand into Southeast Asia

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE, Minister Kim

Sungwhan) announced that it will hold the launch ceremony for the “Pilot Project for the Deployment of Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure in Indonesia” at the Bajra Sandhi Monument in Bali, Indonesia, on October 22.

* The event will mark the introduction of electric buses and charging stations. Following

the handover and selection of an operator, the buses are scheduled to begin service in

November.

The launch ceremony is being organized in cooperation with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Bali provincial government, with approximately 300 attendees expected, including representatives from local government and public-private partnership organizations.

Participants will include Yoon Soongu, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Indonesia; Rachmat Pambudy, Indonesia’s Minister of National Development Planning; Wayan Koster, Governor of Bali; Rowan Fraser, Head of GGGI Indonesia Country Office; and representatives from companies including Hyundai Motor Company and Chaevi.

The project is part of the MCEE’s official development assistance (ODA) program. It will support the development of an eco-friendly public transportation system in Indonesia by introducing 11 Hyundai Motor Company electric buses and six 100 kW fast chargers supplied by Chaevi, an electric vehicle charging equipment company, in Bali, where tourism and transportation demand are concentrated.

This marks the first official introduction of public electric buses in Bali, a region with substantial tourism and public transportation demand. The project is expected to make a tangible contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the public transportation environment.

The project is particularly significant because the successful deployment and demonstration of electric buses and fast-charging equipment from leading Korean companies will serve as international proof of the quality and technological reliability of Korean-made eco-friendly mobility equipment.

In addition, on-the-ground data collected during the demonstration operation, including battery energy efficiency, charging patterns, and passenger demand, is expected to become a valuable asset for strengthening the competitiveness of Korean companies’ green mobility supply chains. The project is also expected to lay the groundwork for expanding exports of eco-friendly transportation technologies and green industries throughout Indonesia and into other Southeast Asian markets.

Kim Ji-yeong, Director General for International Cooperation Bureau at the MCEE, stated, “The deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in Bali will provide an opportunity to expand the overseas application of Korea’s K-Green Mobility solutions.” She added, “Through our ODA programs, we will continue to support developing countries in responding to climate change and achieving sustainable development, while actively supporting the overseas expansion of Korean eco-friendly vehicle and charging equipment companies.”
